Visual Input/Output Devices for Hospital Information Systems

The USPHS Hospital at New Orleans has served as the operational environment and live data source for a program of testing, research and evaluation of the utility of CRT alpha-numeric data entry and display terminals for hospital information system applications. Six device configurations were evaluated in a live hospital setting involving a nurses' station, the hematology laboratory, the admit desk, and the pharmacy. Testing consisted of measurements of information entry and retrieval rates during operation with real patient data. The main objective of the study was the determination of design specifications, cost effectiveness figures, and minimum terminal attributes consistent with hospital information system requirements. Recommendations have been made based on the test results which should help alleviate some of the difficulties inherent in hospital record storage and retrieval by computer. In addition a first step has been taken toward deriving standards for the evaluation and selection of terminals for the medical field. The hardware and communications system which formed the test vehicle is described and evaluated.
