Selected Economic Trends in the Agricultural Sector, Northern Lake States: 1949-64

In almost every agricultural and economic aspect the 119 Northern Region counties (NR) in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin trail the 123 Southern Region counties (SR) in those States and the Nation, but the gap is closing, according to the 1964 Census of Agriculture. Reasons for the NR's lag included obstacles such as a harsher climate, lower land productivity, and land clearance problems not found in the other two areas.
