Synoptic/Dynamic Diagnosis of a Developing Low-Level Cyclone and Its Satellite-Viewed Cloud Patterns

The evolution of a developing low-level baroclinic cyclone and its satellite-viewed cloud patterns is diagnosed with respect to those factors that produced and deformed the cloudiness into characteristic patterns. These factors, viz., vertical motion and circulation in the system, are examined by means of the omega equation and Petterssen's equation for local vorticity tendency at the earth's surface. This type of study can provide background for models relating cloud patterns to the dynamics of the motion system with which they are associated. (Author)
