In view of the many difficulties in interpreting cloud types from TIROS and ESSA cloud photographs it appeared appropriate to see if one could gain further insight into this problem through a statistical treatment of a month's surface meteorological reports. The area chosen was the equatorial Atlantic. Specifically, the time period chosen was that of the IGY period for which there exists the most complete publication of meteorological reports. (Author)
