The dynamic fracture of filament-reinforced metal-matrix composites was investigated using the thin flyer plate technique. Aluminum alloys, containing approximately 50 volume percent boron filaments arranged in two mutually perpendicular directions, were impacted normal to the plane of reinforcement with 0.01 inch thick mylar flyers to induce spall fracture and filament damage. Filament damage, in the form of multiple fiber fractures or crushing, tended to increase with impact velocity. Spall failure and filament damage appeared to be mutually independent. (Author)
