Fifteen experimental electrochemical hydrogen sensors were tested in hydrogen-argon mixtures at several hydrogen levels ranging down to concentrations equivalent to 0.5 ppm hydrogen in sodium. Several new electrolytes were screened and it was shown that electrolytes consisting of molten salts with oxide additions form the basis of a class of hydrogen sensors just as in the case of ionic hydride-bearing molten salts tested previously. Three sensors representing three classes of electrolytes: (1) oxide-activated, (2) solid state (hydride-activated), and (3) all-lithium cation (hydride-activated) were sufficiently sensitive to meet the target sensitivity requirements for the device. A sensor containing 1.2 m/o CaO in LiCl-KCl eutectic was found to be the most reproducible. (Author)
