The objective of the project is to devise, construct and demonstrate a new type of membrane blood oxygenator which should eliminate or minimize most of the difficulties which have prevented the general clinical use of those types described in the literature which are based on the use of extended film membranes. These difficulties seem to arise not from the inherent properties of the films, but from the intricate supporting systems required to maintain proper spacing, distribution of blood and gas flow, pressure, and blood volume. Such systems include precisely embossed spacers, screens, distributor discs, gaskets, pneumatic or hydraulic shims and a strong external housing. The care, maintenance and assembly of these systems appear to be impracticable for general hospital use. The objective was to eliminate all of these elements except a simple housing to provide edge support. This is to be accomplished basically by changing the shape of the membrane. (Author)
