Spatial Concentration of Industry in Appalachia: An Analysis of the Potential for Import Substitution. Appendix B to a Strategy for Development in Central Appalachia

The report serves as an appendix to the separately bound Preliminary Analysis for Development of Central Appalachia. Comparing Appalachia to the United States, it describes the industrial structure of the Region as heavily weighted by a few major export industries, such as steel and chemicals, and by resource-based activities such as coal and as having a deficiency of services. The urban-rural distribution of population also differs significantly from the national average. The study then investigates those kinds of economic activity closely related to the existing export base in an area, the products of which are imported for incorporation in the output of existing export industries and those local-serving kinds of economic activity currently imported which could be provided locally. There is a second separately bound appendix titled Capital Resources in the Central Appalachian Region.
