Health Care Expenditures for the Five Most Common Conditions of Adults Ages 40 to 64, 2009. Statistical Brief No. 382.

Adults ages 4064 comprise one-third of the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population and account for 40 percent of medical expenditures nationally. This Statistical Brief presents data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Surveys Household Component (MEPS-HC) regarding the five conditions affecting the greatest number of people in this age group in 2009. The five most commonly treated conditionshypertension, hyperlipidemia, osteoarthritis, mental disorders, and asthmawere determined by totaling the number of people who had expenses for care associated with each condition and ranking them. Only differences between estimates that are statistically significant at the 0.05 level are discussed in the text.
