Diffusion of Trace Gases for Leak Detection in Aerospace Systems

In any system to be leak-tested by the use of trace gases the validity of the test is predicted on the uniform distribution of the trace gas throughout the system. Since leak detection devices only react to the presence of the trace gas, a leak in a portion of the system not containing the gas would go undetected. An experimental study was undertaken to establish appropriate methods for injection of trace gases and the location of fill points and vent ports in the test system to ensure uniform diffusion of the trace gas.
