The paper describes a computer program for calculating the heat gain in a building due to the lighting system. The program is also capable of calculating lighting design equations yielding either the number of luminaires needed to produce a certain lighting level or the footcandle level due to a certain number of luminaires. A SET OF TIME LAG FACTORS IS APPLIED TO THE BTUH loads because of different types of energy absorption and reradiation into the building mass. These time lags extend for nine hours after each hour the lights are on. The lags are based on research done by members of the Subcommittee on Heating and Cooling Loads of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). The method of installing lights is also taken into consideration in finding the heat gain from these lights. Three input alternatives exist for greater flexibility. Assuming the lighting design was done previously, the total wattage for a room or zone can be input. A second alternative causes the program to calculate lighting design equations but assumes certain information which was not input. This method is suitable for rough, preliminary work. In the third alternative all pertinent information must be input. All three methods produce a profile of the heat gains from lights for each hour of the day. (Author)
