Operation of a Rubella Virus Service Laboratory

More than 12,000 serological tests, principally rubella HI tests, were carried out. Rubella virus was plaque assayed in RK13, SIRC and VERO cells. Methods for routine plaque assay and neutralization antibody tests by plaque-inhibition are presented. Differences in plaque morphology between rubella virus strains are noted. Twenty-five rubella virus strains from Taiwan were characterized as to their RK13, interferon and VERO plaque markers. (Author)
