An Experimental Preparation for the Study of Thrombosis on Artificial Surfaces under Controlled Flow Conditions

The purpose of the present paper is to describe an experimental preparation in which thrombus formation can be observed during blood flow over an artificial surface. This preparation allows for variable but carefully controlled flow conditions as well as insuring that the blood incident on the surface under study has not been activated by previous surface contact. In addition, we shall attempt to illustrate that observations under controlled variations in flow conditions can be used to differentiate among various mechanisms involved. For example, it is possible to distinguish between reactions occurring in the blood and those occurring among species adhering to the surface. Finally, some of the preliminary results obtained on glass surfaces are described. (Author)
