Compatibility of Blood with Materials Useful in the Fabrication of Artificial Organs

A program was continued to investigate the effects of various implantable materials on human plasma proteins in a specially devised experimental system, using a large number of specific parameters for evidence of protein denaturation. Data on the cationic acrylic polyelectrolytes were extended, and showed that several severe adverse effects were produced with the K+, Li+ and Na+ substituted forms of this plastic, while the Ca++ and Mg++ forms were relatively inert. Pyrolytic carbon induced increases in the two dehydrogenase enzyme activities tested, but no other effects were produced by this surface. The presence of the non-ionic detergent, Pluronic F-68, within an epoxy polymer may render this plastic inert with regard to plasma protein denaturations. The silicone elastomer, RB-1684; a polyurethane elastomer; and a saturated block copolymer showed no significant deleterious effects on the protein parameters tested. Ioplex 101; polyvinyl alcohol coated with sialic acid-cholesterol, and acrylamide gel, proved to be relatively inert to plasma proteins. (Author)
