Studies of Blood Flow in and Adjacent to Blood Pumps

The investigation focussed on the fluid dynamic aspects of blood flow and their relationships to the adverse phenomena of hemolysis and thrombus formation. Both analytical and experimental approaches were used. The analytical subtasks include: (1) studies of the mean blood flow patterns in viscoelastic tubes, which leads to a prediction of the pressure required to pump blood through a tube; (2) studies of the effects of blood rheology on flow in tubes, which shows the effects of shear rate, hematocrit, and fibrinogen concentration on blood motion; and (3) studies of erythrocyte collisions, which show the effects of hydrodynamic and inter-cellular forces on the collision process. The experimental work utilized a specially-developed fluid, 'pseudo-blood', and included determination of laminar velocity profiles, flow separation in stenoses, and the transition to turbulence.
