Molecular Size Distributions of Asphalt as Determined by Gel Permeation Chromatography

Samples of 85-100 penetration grade asphalt cement were artificially aged to obtain varying degrees of asphalt hardness. Conventional materials test results and gel chromatograms were obtained for each specimen. Statistical tests for significance were used to show changes in material properties as indicated by conventional gel test methods. The data indicate that gel permeation chromatography is a reproducible method of test and could be used for consistency control of asphalt materials. Significant changes in asphalt properites were reflected by changes in the gel chromatograms. These changes, which are dramatic losses of pentration, ductility etc., are shown as increases in large molecular sizes in gel chromatograms. (Author)
