Combination of Tuberculosis with Hypo- and Aplastic Anemia

A correlation between the administration of corticosteroid therapy and activation of the tuberculous process has been established. There are findings in the literature that suggest that such therapy can exacerbate the tuberculosis. From 1948 to 1965, postmortem examinations were performed on the cadavers of 110 patients who had died of hypo- and aplastic anemia. Fourteen of them (12.7%) were found to have tuberculosis, although the disease was in an active phase in only 5 instances (4.5%). Two patients revealed a fresh primary complex without generalization, 2 showed mineralization of the process, and 1 patient was found to have had a flareup of old pulmonary tuberculosis. Three patients had received corticosteroids, but only for 5 days and in a total dose that did not exceed 750 mg. Two other patients had received prednisolone. In the first case, the course of treatment continued for 2 months, while the second received massive therapy. Pronounced miliarization of the process occurred in both cases.
