The microstructures and mechanical properties of some quenched and tempered niobium and vanadium-nitrogen steels are reported. The properties were produced in laboratory trials on 1/2 in thick plate which was quenched to simulate the cooling of 1 in thick plate using the BISRA quenching rig. The plates were water quenched directly after controlled rolling to 950 C and subsequently tempered in the temperature range 600 - 675 C for 1 hour. The effect of quenching rate is also described. It has been possible to produce yield strengths up to 77.0 hbar (50.0 tonf/sq in) with adequate toughness in simulated 1 in plate. (Author)
