Adhesive Restorative Dental Materials

Overall goals of the research were to demonstrate the feasibility of adhesive restorative and preventative dental materials. In restorative materials, the goal has been to demonstrate the possibility of systems designed to eliminate marginal leakage and recurrent caries as well as to permit use of non-retentive cavity preparations. Resilient polyurethane liners were demonstrated to prevent marginal discoloration in vivo in connection with bulk restoratives in conical non-undercut preparations in dogs for periods up to 18 months. Polyurethane materials were shown to possess the basic physical properties and adhesiveness needed for use as sealants for pits and fissures, and thus offer the promise of significant advances in caries prevention. Maximum adhesion of polyurethane and epoxy resins to dental surfaces was obtained when citric acid was used as an etchant and organo-functional silanes were utilized in the adhesive formulation or were applied prior to the application of the adhesive.
