A Simple Mathematical Model for the Description of the Postoperative Albumin Exchange Between the Intravascular and Wound Spaces in Rabbits

The postoperative turnover of albumin was evaluated in rabbits. The concentration of albumin in serum decreased some ten per cent immediately after operation. This decrease was due to a temporary, internal loss of albumin in the operative wound and to a temporarily decreased rate of synthesis. On the basis of the experimental results a mathematical model describing the postoperative albumin exchange between the intravascular and wound spaces was constructed. The validity of this model is discussed in relation to the agreement between the results obtained from the model and from the experimental studies. (Author)
