The Performance of an Inclinometer for Measuring Lateral Movements in Soil

The report describes an investigation of the performance of an inclinometer system, developed commercially, for measuring the horizontal movement of earth masses. Full-scale laboratory trials were carried out to determine the accuracy of the instrument and the results show that horizontal movements can generally be determined to within seven millimetres over a vertical distance of six metres. The instrument will, therefore, provide a suitable method for determining horizontal movements although it is essential to check the calibration frequently while measurements are being taken. The calculations involved in the analysis of inclinometer data and nomograms which facilitate this work are included. The inclinometer was used for measuring horizontal movement on a road embankment site at Tickton in the East Riding of Yorkshire, where values up to 350 millimetres were recorded. (Author)
