As part of its ongoing mission, the United States Sentencing Commission provides Congress, the judiciary, the executive branch, and the general public with data extracted and analyzed from sentencing documents submitted by courts to the Commission. Data is reported on an annual basis in the Commission's 'Annual Report' and 'Sourcebook of Federal Sentencing Statistics'. After the Supreme Court's decision in 'United States v. Booker' on January 12, 2005, which rendered the sentencing guidelines advisory instead of mandatory, many people expressed an interest in knowing what changes, if any, in federal sentencing practices would result. The Commission responded by reconfiguring its data collection, analysis, and reporting efforts to provide real-time data reporting from the submitted documents.
