Impact Capability of Safety Glazing Materials

A free fall drop tester was designed and fabricated to attain data for usage in formulation of a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard. The current ASA Z26.1-1966 was the basis for the design; the particular test technique employed and justification for certain physical limits on the equipment are discussed. Of greatest consequence was the usage of a statistical 'up-and-down' test on the samples to provide a means of conveniently conducting the tests with the practical emphasis on economy while attaining a more than sufficient assurance of the result. The information gathered pertained to the cracking, breaking and penetration characteristics of contemporary and candidate automotive safety glazing materials. The responses of these materials when impacted by four standard impact tools are tabulated, discussed, and illustrated. (Author)
