Analysis of Fatigue and Fracture of Bituminous Paving Mixtures.

It is postulated that in materials such as asphaltic concrete and sand asphalt mixtures which are abundantly endowed with flaws,fatigue damage is initiated at the first loading cycle so that the fatigue life is the number of cycles of repeated loading to propagate a 'starter flaw',into a crack of critical size. The starter flaw is a materials constant,but is subject to statistical variation and is believed to principally responsible for the statistical variation of fatigue life. The fatigue behavior of simply supported asphalt beams and beams on elastic foundation are examined using experimental and analytical methods of fracture mechanics. (Author)
