Diseases of Forest and Shade Trees of the United States

The volume brings together the information available on the pathology of the more important forest and shade trees of the United States. While it deals largely with the multitude of tree species indigenous to the country, it also annotates the diseases of many introduced species grown widely for shade and ornament. It includes diseases occurring in continental U.S., exclusive of Alaska, and in adjacent parts of Canada. Many small native trees of little importance for timber or shade, and also shrubs, have been omitted. As a major effort devoted to describing the pathology of the tree species and to provide aids in diagnosis, the book should not only serve an immediate need but also form a base for the development of succeeding works devoted to improving disease diagnosis in trees in all parts of the world. Accessibility of subject matter, completeness of coverage, and adequate documentation were the dominating guidelines followed. It is restricted to a consideration of diseases, with insects or other agents discussed only where necessary to the understanding of a disease. The material is arranged first by the tree host species or genus, and within species according to part of the tree mainly attacked.
