Mathematical and physical models were used to evaluate the design of a proposed selective withdrawal outlet system for a fish hatchery downstream from Pueblo Dam, Colo. The mathematical model predicted that the reservoir would be stratified during a few months in the spring but would be isothermal during the summer and fall. The effects of an existing barrier dam were estimated by the mathematical model and by a physical model. The stratification patterns upstream from the barrier, predicted by the mathematical model, were used in a 1:60 scale hydraulic model to study conditions downstream from barrier. The barrier acted as a skimmer, causing the flow of warmer water from higher levels in the reservoir to enter the region downstream from the barrier. The river outlets and municipal outlet operation in drawing down the isotherms caused warmer temperatures of withdrawal at the hatchery outlets. A higher hatchery outlet was recommended, in addition to the 3 hatchery outlets included in the preliminary design. (Author)
