Loblolly (Pinus taeda) and shortleaf (P. echinata Mill.) pines have been planted on many abandoned fields in the Ridge and Valley, Cumberland Plateau, Eastern Highland Rim, and Western Highland Rim regions of Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia.
