Development and Testing of an Improved Resonant Piezoelectric Energy-Converter System.

The report describes the testing and evaluation of a blood pump module and a piezoelectric pump to determine the feasibility of developing a heart-assist system incorporating these components. Material incompatibility problems and control logic inadequacy precluded further development and testing of the blood pump module under the contract. Tests of the piezoelectric pump revealed design deficiencies and provided data later used in a re-designed PZ pump. Further work resulted in a trial design of an implantable low-pressure PZ pump and a new high-pressure pump concept. (Author)
