Study of Communication Links for the Biomedical Communications Network.

This report presents the results of a study performed for the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications. It was aimed at exploring the technological and economic aspects of providing a network of data links for the Biomedical Communications Network(BCN). Consideration is given to a variety of different communication links that are suitable for interconnecting elements of the network on a local or intracity level and/or on a national or intercity level. Particular attention is paid to the use of satellites for some or all of these network functions. Several methods of comparing network approaches are developed and it is shown that under conditions of moderate to large network link requirements,satellites become quite attractive. Design and performance data for a number of satellites which have been proposed by a variety of organizations are summarized,and original design and performance data for four potential satellite systems having unique and perhaps attractive features are given in detail.
