A study of the crack extension mechanisms subsequent to yielding, indicates that account must be taken of both metallurgical and mechanical aspects of the failure process.nIn acknowledging the need for a simple, yet realistic, laboratory test able to select materials in terms-of the conditions for fracture initiation and risk of continued propagation, a definitive energy criterion is presented based on routine, but fully instrumented fracture toughness tests.
