Final Commissioning and Providing of the Scunthorpe Group ARL 72000/Honeywell 316System,

The ARL 72000 X-ray spectrometer on-line to a Honeywell 316computer installed at Scunthorpe has been calibrated and used for the analysis of a series of LD steelmaking slags with the object of testing the performance of the software and the functioning of the system as a whole. It has been shown that the software meets the requirements specified and that the system is capable of automatically analysing oxide materials accurately and speedily. In the light of the experience gained and further developments in the application of computers to analytical instruments some modifications are suggested to improve the performance of the system. The most important of these is the replacement of manual control of drift by an automatic procedure integrated into the computer program. (Author)
