Indirect Hemagglutination Assay for Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Antibody.

Large scale immunization with purified pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccines require the use of a rapid and specific means for determining antibody titers before and following immunization. A hemagglutination technique has many advantages providing the following criteria are met: (1) ability to coat all antigens onto red cells, (2) reproducible results, (3) sensitivity, (4) capable of handling large numbers of samples, (5) measurement of 'protective'antibody. It is believed that all of these criteria except No. 5have been met. Currently there is insufficient information concerning the correlation of antibody level and class in relation to protection.
