An Assessment of Automotive Fuel System Fire Hazards.

An integrated program of vehicle analyses,fuel system component tests,and full-scale vehicle tests was conducted to determine automotive fuel system fire hazards in vehicles containing fuel evaporative emission control devices. Fuel system damage may occur during front,rear,or side impacts,resulting in massive fuel spillage. Roll-over accidents invariably spill fuel. Rear-mounted fuel tanks are particularly susceptible to damage during rear end impacts. Based on the results of this study, crashworthy fuel system modifications were recommended and performance standards for fuel system integrity were proposed.
