Improving the Thermal Design of Reheating Furnaces Using a Computer Model.

The use of a computer model for predicting the performance of fuel-fired continuous reheating furnaces is described. The model is novel insofar as it assumes a gas temperature distribution and, for defined geometrical data of the structure and the thickness and throughput of the stock, calculates both furnace refractory temperatures and stock temperatures. A comparison is made between the predictions of the model and measured values from a production furnace, from which it is shown that the model gives results within an acceptable degree of accuracy. The effect of the roof profile of the furnace zones on the distribution of heat flux to the stock is investigated, and also the effects of the size, shape and position of the flames. It is concluded that the computer model provides a quick and reliable method of assessing both new designs of open-flame furnaces and design improvements to existing furnaces. (Author)
