Evaluation of Floating Glass Beads for Traffic Stripes.

The report presents the results of a 2-year field study to determine the possibility for improving the performance of New Jersey traffic lines by reflectorizing these markings with a new type of small,essentially single-size glass bead having a unique flotation property. Ther performance of the beads was determined in tests of both transverse lines and actual lane lines on both concrete and bituminous pavement. The beads studied were of four general types: standard well-graded beads,uniform graded beads with and without a flotation feature,and a special 'rain'bead. The 'rain'beads were well-graded,high refractive index,floating beads which were designed to provide good night visibility in rainy weather. (Author)
