Field Tests of Water Pipe Linings. A Summary of 15th-year Shasta and 10th-year Collbran Performance,

Performance of lining systems for metalwork in continuous fresh water immersion is reported for two separate,major Reclamation field tests,one in a penstock at Shasta Dam,California (initiated 1949),and another in a siphon on the Collbran Project,Colorado (initiated 1959). Of 26initial linings,one phenolic, 2red lead phenolic,and 2vinyl resin linings gave excellent performance for 15 yrs in the Shasta penstock. As the basis for a durability projection, 5-yr defect-free service in this test presaged a 70% probability of 15-yr excellent service. Twenty-five of the initial 36linings in the Collbran siphon remained defect-free after 10 yrs of immersion. Only a liquid applied neoprene among the Collbran linings was virtually unaffected by moderate sand erosion;however,the catalyzed phenolic paint,systems containing an appreciable thickness (13-16mils) of sprayed zinc metal,asphalt enamel,and coal-tar enamel appear suitable for mild erosion exposures.
