Alternative Structures for Television.

The paper compares the performance of the television industry in terms of viewer satisfaction under three alternative structures: (1) the present structure, (2) a structure in which one firm controls all channels,and (3) a structure in which several firms take turns controlling all channels in rotation. It is demonstrated that structure (3) may result in greater consumer (viewer) satisfaction than either alternative structure under certain assumptions. Attention is confined to the case of limited channel capacity. (Author)
