A study was conducted to determine if a vacuum saturation procedure could be used as a rapid and economical method for accurately predicting the freeze-thaw durability of stabilized materials such as soil-cement,lime-flyash,and lime-soil mixtures. The soils used in the stabilized mixtures were representative of those found in Illinois. Vacuum saturation was accomplished by allowing specimens,which had previously been exposed to a vacuum pressure of 24in. of mercury for 30min. to soak in water for 1hr at atmospheric pressure. Freeze-thaw cycles were accomplished with an automatic freeze-thaw cabinet programmed to simulate a realistic freeze-thaw cycle. Unconfined compressive strength and moisture content measurements were used to evaluate the durability of the stabilized materials.
