Asphalt Paving Mixtures Produced by the Dryer-Drum Process.

A relatively new process for manufacturing asphalt paving mixtures,known as the dryer-drum mixing process,was investigated. Through the reduction in the amount of equipment required and the nature of the production process itself,there appears to be appreciable reductions in air pollution emissions and production costs. Field observations and laboratory testing have shown the process produces a satisfactory product. Although both aggregate and asphalt enter the flame end of the drum and parallel the gas flow,the asphalt is hardened or aged less than,or no more than,that in a conventional process. Moisture content in the asphalt mixture at the time of laydown may be beneficial as a compaction aid and there is no tendency for later stripping. (Author)
