Evaluation of Air Purifying Device in a Coke Oven Atmosphere

The effectiveness of an air purifier for coke oven work areas was evaluated. The device consisted of a filter, catalytic oxidizer, charcoal bed, air blower, air heater, and air cooler. Air samples collected around a larry car were analyzed for carbon-monoxide (630080), total hydrocarbons, sulfur (7704349), particulates, and oxides of nitrogen. The air purifier effectively reduced the concentrations of all the contaminants. The authors suggest that the device could be used in other areas near the coke oven, including the pusher car cabs, quench car cab, weight tower, and waiting rooms. Several recommendations are included for efficient operation and maintenance of the purifier and for the optimal size of the system based on larry car volume and the contaminants present.
