This document contains highlights from the Veterans Administration (VA) Studies in Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences 18th Annual Conference. Included are symposia on the following subjects: therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of senility, fact or artifact; approaches to program evaluation; special research reports on affective illness; and active treatment of the chronic schizophrenic. Also included are summaries of teaching seminars covering such topics as managing side effects of drugs, trends in drug treatment programs, current approaches to aftercare and outplacement, and medical care of the hospitalized psychiatric patient. The keynote address, presented by Dr. John Romano, Professor of Psychiatry, School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Rochester, is entitled 'On Those Who RemainCurious', which treats the topic of a small number of clinical investigators in a veterans hospital who pursued their research interests and studies without benefit of special grants, technicians or salary increments.
