Rice Drying Rates

Rice is ordinarily harvested at moisture contents above safe storage levels, so additional drying is usually necessary. The purpose of the research discussed in this report was to determine the factors which affect rice drying rates. The basic approach used was to divide the drying process into separate processes, including temperature equilibrium between the grain and air, moisture removal and evaporative cooling of the air and grain. Prediction of the amount of drying that occurs in a thin layer of rice can be made by considering the initial air and grain conditions using a thin layer drying equation and complete heat balances to predict the final air and grain temperature.
