Combined loading tests were conducted on six classes of 24-inch-diameter asbestos-cement pipe producted by two different manufacturers to verify the validity of using the Schlick formula for the design of such large diameter pipe. The Schlick formula previously has been verified for use by tests on 6-and 12-inch-diameter pipe. The combined loading conditions of internal pressure and external three-edge bearing load were applied to sections of pipe classed as AC4, AC6, AC9, AC10, AC13,and AC18. Results of these tests indicate that the combined loading design theory (Schlick formula) is a valid method for the design of asbestos-cement pipe of this diameter. Because of the verification using 24-inch-diameter pipe tests,the Schlick formula may be used with greater confidence for rigid pipe. The Bureau uses this formula in the design of asbestos-cement pipe in diameters 4through 42inches.
