Studies are described that were directed toward improving the design of certain types of tunnel support systems. Studies to predict the interaction of a circular liner with the medium performed with a linear finite element computer program and a closed form solution are described. Two construction techniques that give different interaction solutions and thus different liner loadings were simulated. Results are presented in the form of dimensionless plots from which moment,thrust,shear and deformation can be predicted. Eleven large-scale tests which simulate steel horseshoe sets in rock tunnels are described and the effects of connection characteristics,blocking stiffness,load distribution and load inclination on the set behavior are discussed.
