Fatigue Strength of Steel Beams with Welded Stiffeners and Attachments.

This report presents the results of a study of the fatigue strength of certain structural details used in steel beams for highway bridges. Some 157beams and girders were fabricated and tested. Most of these were used to define the fatigue strength of transverse stiffeners and attachments under constant-amplitude fatigue loading. Stress range was observed to account for nearly all the variation in cycle life for all details tested. For purposes of design,the fatigue strength of ASTM 514steel rolled beams was found to be about the same as A36and A441steel rolled beams. The results of this study were combined with other findings to develop the new fatigue provisions presented in this report. These recommendations were adopted in late 1973and are included in the 1974Interim Specifications of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
