Effectiveness of Respirable Dust Control by Water through the Drum on an 11CM Joy Continuous Miner.

Control of the dust produced by continuous mining machines is coal mines is generally obtained by water sprays from fixed nozzles mounted on the frame of the machine in back of the cutting head. Mounting the nozzles on the rotating head of the machine closer to the coal cutting bits may improve the efficiency of dust suppression. To test this concept,respirable dust measurements were made during 39regular production shifts in an underground mine using a Joy 11CM continuous miner. The equipment used,difficulties encountered,and measurements obtained are described.
