摘要

Performance of acute animal studies have demonstrated the feasibility of a completely implantable heart replacement. In these acute studies carried out in almost 90calves, a limited amount of physiologic data has been obtained on the effects of pumping upon organ function and upon the hematologic elements. Surgical procedures,cardiopulmonary bypass techniques and instrumentation techniques for the evaluation of the total heart system have been standardized. A number of anatomic,surgical and physiologic problems have been studied and documented. A number of electromechanical problems and problems related to the pump itself have been studied and defined. A constant effort to redevelop and upgrade this complex and sophisticated hardware was expended during the acute animal evaluative phase.
