A review is given of the use of rare earth metals in the production of high quality plate steels by the British Steel Corporation. The factors affecting the precipitation of sulphide inclusions in rare earth free and rare earth treated steels are discussed and the production route for linepipe steels is outlined. Details are given of desulphurisation of iron and steel,rare earth metal addition rates and techniques and the resultant effect on mechanical properties.
