Penetration Characteristics of the 10mm Nylon Cyclone.

The purpose of the work was to determine the flow rate at which the 10mm nylon cyclone samples polydisperse coal dust in accordance with the AEC definition of respirable dust. The penetration characteristics of the cyclone were determined by taking simultaneous replicate samples of total and respirable dust from a polydisperse coal dust aerosol. The collected coal samples were analyzed for volume diameter distribution with a Coulter counter. Aerodynamic equivalent sizes were calculated from measured values of volume diameter and coal density. The ratio of volume diameter to Stokes diameter was assumed to be 1.0for the calculation of aerodynamic diameters. The results of more than 110runs indicated that the cyclone more closely sampled in accordance with the USAEC respirable dust standard at a flow rate of 2.0liters/min than it did at 1.8liters/min. Relative humidity was not found to have a significant effect on the results.
