Asphalt Core Sampling and Recovery Techniques.

The effect of sample size (number of core sites per sample),sampling location (within and between wheel paths in passing or travel lane),and the substitution of methanol as part of the solvent used in the Abson recovery process were investigated. The study involved taking additional cores from the Ludlow Test Section and comparing the results. Statistical methods were employed to determine the confidence interval based on the penetration test results. The findings indicate that a minimum of four core sets per test area are necessary to insure an adequate sample of a section. The substitution of methanol in the Abson recovery does not appear to produce any significant benefits.
